King Charles Officially Removes Prince Andrew of Royal Highness Title and Princely Dignity

In a definitive move, King Charles has officially removed the former Duke of York of his Royal Highness attribute and his title of prince.

The changes were made official by issuing royal documents under the official state seal, which were published in the UK's official public record.

The official notice declared: “The king has been graciously inclined by letters patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 3 November 2025 to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall cease to be entitled to hold and enjoy the designation of ‘Royal Highness’ and the titular dignity of ‘Prince of the realm’.”

A separate entry confirmed the stripping of the dukedom from the roll of peerage, effective immediately.

The notice stated: “The king has been pleased to direct by warrant under his royal sign manual dated 30 October 2025 to direct his government minister to ensure the titleholder to be removed from the peerage roll.”

Context of the Decision

The move follows increasing controversy over Andrew's links to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, including the posthumous publication of Virginia Giuffre's memoir.

Giuffre alleged that she was sexually abused by Andrew after being trafficked by Jeffrey Epstein, allegations that Mountbatten Windsor has always strenuously denied.

Mechanism of Removing Titles

Charles utilized his royal prerogative—recognized rights held by the monarch—after consultation with government advisers, rather than through legislative action.

Royal instruments and warrants are instruments of this authority, used to bestow or remove titles and honors.

Because the Royal Highness designation is conferred by letters patent, it can be revoked through the same process.

Additional Measures and Backing

After the initial announcement, the senior legal official was directed to draft the necessary documents for the title removals.

The decision also includes Andrew relinquishing his tenancy on his Windsor residence, a thirty-room Crown Estate property where he has resided for twenty years.

Officials fully supported the monarch's decision.

Retained Honor

In spite of the stripping of honors, it was announced that Andrew will retain his South Atlantic medal, granted for his service as a helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands War.
