An Australian is among the 115 individuals wounded in a fire that tore through a busy tavern during a New Year’s Eve party in the Swiss ski resort of Crans Montana, killing 40 people.
Government Confirmation on Australian Casualty
Australia’s climate change and energy minister, Chris Bowen, stated early Friday that an Australian had been injured and was obtaining medical care and diplomatic support.
“It’s clearly a terrible, terrible tragedy and I am confident every Australian extends their sympathies to the people of Switzerland, the individuals affected,” Bowen stated on ABC RN radio.
He further stated, “It can be confirmed an Australian national was injured and is getting medical attention and the family is being assisted, Australian consular support. I am unable to provide more specifics for privacy reasons. The name of the individual is not being released at this point.”
Diplomatic Assistance and Ongoing Inquiries
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade verified early Friday it was providing consular assistance to the affected individual and their relatives.
A Dfat spokesperson said: “DFAT is currently offering consular support to the relatives of an Australian national that has been wounded and is in care following the fire. Because of our privacy commitments we are unable to provide further comment.”
The representative further stated, “DFAT is conducting urgent checks with local authorities to determine whether any further Australian nationals were involved. Our team is ready to give consular help.”
Nature of Consular Assistance
Diplomatic aid often encompasses:
- Reaching out to or attending hospitals in the area.
- Liaising with local authorities.
- Provision of lists of medical providers.
- Help in contacting relatives.
Circumstances Surrounding the Tragic Fire
Local police reported the blaze began around 1:30 a.m., local time, in a nightclub frequented by visitors called Le Constellation bar, which is situated in the heart of the Valais resort.
Footage from the event reveals fierce orange flames from inside the ground-floor bar and lounge. Cries and blaring music are audible, and a number of individuals were observed fallen outside the building.
Some people who died in the fire have yet to be identified yet due to the extent of their injuries.
Investigation into the Blaze's Cause
Authorities confirmed the fire was not deliberately set for the blaze, which is thought to be the result of an accident.
