Afghan Taliban and Pakistan Claim Multiple Deaths in Fresh Cross-Border Fighting
New fighting broke out along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border early on Wednesday, with each side blaming the opposing side of initiating lethal confrontations.
Pakistan's armed forces stated that its troops had killed "15-20 Afghan Taliban" and wounded many in the Spin Boldak district border district.
A Taliban government representative claimed that twelve Afghan civilians had been fatally struck and more than 100 wounded by Pakistani firing. He added that several Pakistani soldiers had been lost their lives. Not one of the reported fatalities could be verified by third parties.
Violence between the neighbouring countries has flared since explosions shook Afghanistan recently, which Kabul attributed on Islamabad. The Taliban deny allegations that it is sheltering militants aiming at Pakistan.
Social Media and Military Engagements
The two sides are not only battling for the upper hand on the frontier, but also on social media, trying to convince the general population that their faction is causing more damage.
The most recent clashes come after severe border hostilities over the past few days, when the Afghan forces asserted to have killed fifty-eight members of the Pakistani military and Pakistan said it killed two hundred "Taliban and linked insurgents". The reported death tolls announced by both parties could not be confirmed by external sources.
A few days of fragile calm that had lasted since the recent days were shattered on Wednesday morning.
Local Reports and Consequences
Videos purportedly of the conflict and its aftereffects have been shared on the internet and on social channels, including images said to be of those deceased and grainy shots from low-light cameras claiming to be of check posts destroyed. These recordings have not been verified.
A source in the border area in Afghanistan stated that fighting erupted at around 4 a.m. local time (23:30 GMT on Tuesday). Another resident in Spin Boldak, who lives about one kilometre away from the frontier post, said that "very heavy hostilities continued for almost several hours".
"I see drones and fighter planes soaring over us, a number of our relatives are injured," they added.
A doctor in one of the medical facilities in the region reported that he tallied "7 bodies and 36 injured brought to the hospital", including males, females and minors.
The circumstances were "tense" and additional victims were being taken to hospital, he said.
Displacement and Global Responses
A regional authority figure in the area stated that "numerous of families have been forced to flee since the previous evening due to the heavy clashes". He mentioned they were on "high alert" after a few military positions were attacked by aircraft from Pakistan. He added that they had the bodies of two Pakistani military members.
In a separate overnight clash on Pakistan's north-western frontier, the Pakistani military claimed that 25 to 30 Taliban and local insurgent fighters were "suspected" to have been killed.
The clashes have led to appeals for reduced tensions from foreign nations including China and Russia, as well as a proposal from the American leader that he could intervene to broker peace.
On Wednesday, a UN official, UN special rapporteur on the conditions of civil liberties in Afghanistan, posted on a social media platform that he was "deeply concerned" by reports of non-combatant deaths and evacuations because of the fighting.
"I call on everyone involved to practice the utmost caution, safeguard civilians, and follow global regulations," he wrote.
Long-Standing Tensions
Islamabad has for years alleged the Afghan Taliban of allowing the Pakistan Taliban to function from their territory and fight against the Islamabad government in an attempt to enforce a rigid religion-based system of governance.
The Afghan Taliban government has always denied these allegations.
